On the evening of Tuesday, January 27, 2026, a devastating explosion and ensuing fire ripped through an apartment complex in Bell Gardens, California, forever altering the lives of multiple families and claiming the life of Carlos Abraham Hernandez, age 13.
The blast, believed to have occurred around 6 p.m. in the 6500 block of Purdy Avenue, instantly transformed what should have been a peaceful evening into a scene of chaos, heartbreak, and profound loss.
Emergency crews from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and law enforcement arrived to find a two-story building engulfed in flames following a powerful explosion. Nearly 60 firefighters battled the blaze for over an hour, working to extinguish intense flames that had blown out windows, collapsed parts of the roof, and left the structure in ruins.
Inside the home, investigators would later determine that materials consistent with homemade fireworks or explosive devices were present raising the likelihood that the explosion was linked to an attempt to assemble or handle a pyrotechnic device improperly.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Department’s Arson and Explosives Detail responded to document the scene and determine the precise cause of the blast. Officials emphasized that the incident appears to be isolated and not a broader public safety threat.
Tragically, Carlos Hernandez was found deceased inside the apartment by first responders. Carlos was a seventh-grade student at Suva Intermediate School, remembered by teachers, friends, and family as cheerful, generous, and full of life.
He was active in his church community, serving as an altar boy, and had a passion for cooking, gaming, and caring for his family’s pets. His quick wit and warm smile left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
The blast also critically injured other family members. Carlos’ half-brother, 24-year-old Christopher Benitez, was transported to a hospital with severe burn injuries and later succumbed to those injuries making him the second fatality in the tragedy.
Christopher, a member of the National Guard and a devoted family member, was described as brave, caring, and deeply committed to his faith and community. Both brothers’ lives were celebrated as ones marked by kindness, service, and affection for those around them.
Another child present at the scene was treated and released, while a third brother suffered serious burns and was hospitalized. Multiple families in the apartment complex were displaced due to the extensive property damage, and the American Red Cross responded to assist those affected with shelter and support.
