On January 29, 2026, early Thursday morning, a tragic and fatal double shooting occurred at a residence in Bradford County, Florida, resulting in the deaths of estranged spouses Loyd Alan Kerr, 50, and Rachael Renee Kerr, 43.
Law enforcement officers from the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 hang-up call shortly before 5:15 a.m. from a home on Northeast Sixth Lane in Starke, a community in northern Florida.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Loyd Alan Kerr deceased near the front entrance with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Upon learning that a woman also lived at the residence, investigators conducted a search of the property and found Rachael Renee Kerr unresponsive in the yard with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the neck. First responders and medical personnel initiated life-saving efforts, but she was later pronounced dead.
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that minor children were inside the home at the time of the incident. Although they were not physically harmed in the shooting, authorities transferred the children to the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) for care and placement with family members.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that the double shooting was related to an ongoing domestic violence case involving the estranged couple.
Rachael Kerr had previously obtained a protective injunction against her husband and had repeatedly contacted law enforcement to report violations of that order, including alleged unwanted contact and claims that tracking devices were being placed on her vehicle.
Despite arrests and legal action designed to enforce the injunction and prevent further violence, the situation ended tragically.
Bradford County Chief Deputy Colonel Brad Smith acknowledged that despite Rachel’s efforts to follow legal protections, the system was ultimately not enough to prevent the fatal outcome.
Evidence suggests the violence was escalating in the days leading up to the shooting, and a 911 call from Rachel’s phone included sounds consistent with an active confrontation before the connection was lost.
Neighbors and local residents described the scene as shocking and heartbreaking, especially given that children were present in the home. One nearby resident recounted witnessing signs of the argument and attempting to intervene before law enforcement’s arrival.
The deaths of Loyd and Rachael Kerr highlight the persistent and devastating danger of domestic violence, even when protective measures are taken.
Law enforcement and community leaders have renewed calls for improved support systems and interventions for individuals in violent domestic situations, stressing the need for resources that go beyond legal injunctions in order to better safeguard vulnerable partners.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to assemble a timeline of events and are cooperating with family members to provide answers and support during this difficult time.
