Anthony Hinkler, age 86, of Greenville, South Carolina, passed away Saturday morning, July 19, 2025, following a devastating pedestrian accident. According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. on Roper Mountain Road near Green Arbor Lane.

Mr. Hinkler was struck by a vehicle and tragically pronounced dead at the scene around 8:16 a.m. The coroner ruled his death accidental, attributing it to multiple blunt-force injuries.

Born on November 2, 1938, in Greenville, Anthony was a lifelong resident who carried a deep love for his community. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, his presence brought warmth and wisdom to all who knew him.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Anthony served his country with honor during the late 1950s, instilling values of duty, discipline, and integrity that guided him throughout his life.

Following his military service, Anthony built a successful career as a machinist at Greenville’s historic textile mills. His precision, work ethic, and mentorship to younger colleagues earned him respect across the factory floor.

A craftsman at heart, he often applied his mechanical skills to personal projects—overhauling vintage lawn tractors, restoring antique tools, or building custom wood furniture for loved ones.

Anthony was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Greenville, participating in numerous outreach and volunteer efforts. He cherished time spent in community service—whether helping organize soup kitchens or offering his handyman skills to homebound seniors. His quiet generosity touched many lives and stood as a testament to his humble spirit.

A proud father, Anthony married the love of his life, Margaret (née Collins), in 1962. Their union, blessed with 63 years of shared adventures, love, and resilience, often served as a solid example of partnership. Together, they raised three children: Michael, Laura, and Samuel.

Family was the center of Anthony’s universe—Sunday dinners, family reunions, holiday gatherings, and fishing trips at Lake Keowee formed the backdrop of treasured memories.

In his free time, Anthony pursued passions that brought him joy and relaxation. He was an avid outdoorsman—fishing, hiking, and tending to his small vegetable garden brought him great comfort. He could be found most weekends with a coffee in hand, reading the newspaper or chatting with neighbors on his front porch.

Known for a sharp wit and readiness to lend help, neighbors turned to him for advice or a practical solution. He never hesitated to share his time.

Anthony is survived by his beloved wife Margaret; sons Michael (wife Caroline) and Samuel (wife Teresa); daughter Laura (husband Benjamin); and six grandchildren whom he adored—Emily, Joshua, Madeline, Grace, Caleb, and Ella. He also leaves behind a loving sister, Doris Hinkler, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Rose Hinkler, and his brothers, Joseph and Peter.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, 180 Furman Hall Road, Greenville, SC. A funeral service honoring Anthony’s life will follow on Thursday, July 24, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church Greenville, with interment at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Anthony’s memory to Greenville’s Meals on Wheels program or to First Baptist Church’s community outreach fund—organizations dear to his heart.

Anthony’s departure is deeply mourned, yet his legacy endures through the kindness he shared, the lives he shaped, and the love he leaves behind. May we each honor his memory by serving others with the same humility, diligence, and grace that defined his life.

Rest in peace, Anthony—your watch is over, but your spirit remains with us always.
