A 21-year-old faces a DUI manslaughter charge for killing his friend in a high-speed crash, a charge that pales next to the loss of an 18-year-old's future. That victim, David Salazar-Castillo, died trapped inside the car after the impaired driver, Arael Vaquero, struck two fixed objects on a Largo street. Salazar-Castillo was pronounced dead by first responders, his potential erased in an instant. Vaquero’s arrest followed, with the investigation squarely blaming his impairment for the fatal collision. The wreckage is cleared, but the question of exactly what the car hit remains, a minor mystery in a major tragedy.
Emergency crews arrived to find a young man already beyond help, his life ending alone on a rural highway in the early morning darkness. Diante Adams, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on Highway 385 in Bennettsville, Marlboro County, after first responders tried and failed to revive him following Friday's collision. Coroner De'Aron Smith confirmed his death, and now authorities are working to determine what caused the crash. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Marlboro County Coroner's Office are investigating, but details about what led to the wreck have not been made public yet. Was it driver error, a sudden medical event, road conditions, or vehicle malfunction?
Witnesses saw the SUV stop, a woman step out, then drive off, leaving Miguel Alteres fatally injured in the roadway before dawn Friday. Police say the 32-year-old was crossing 43rd Avenue near McDowell Road when he was hit around 5:45 a.m. Fire crews tried to revive him, but he died at the scene. The vehicle was identified as a gray Jeep Cherokee, and investigators quickly began searching for the driver. On Saturday, police confirmed the arrest of 24-year-old Michelle Guzman-Garcia, who is now facing charges connected to the hit-and-run. Detectives are still investigating and urging anyone with information to contact Silent Witness. The community is left mourning Miguel’s death while waiting for answers that remain unresolved
