Before dawn on Friday, tragedy struck along 43rd Avenue near McDowell Road in west Phoenix. Witnesses told police they saw a gray SUV come to a brief stop in the middle of the road, a woman step out for a moment, and then drive away.

Moments later, the stillness of the early morning was shattered when bystanders realized that a man, later identified as 32-year-old Miguel Alteres, lay fatally injured in the roadway.

It was around 5:45 a.m., and despite the efforts of fire and rescue crews who rushed to the scene, Miguel could not be revived. He was pronounced dead where he fell, the victim of what police now describe as a hit-and-run.

Officers immediately began piecing together what had happened.

Tire marks, debris from the vehicle, and surveillance footage from nearby businesses helped investigators identify the suspect’s car as a gray Jeep Cherokee

Witnesses provided additional details about the woman who had briefly exited the SUV before leaving the scene.

Detectives spent much of Friday canvassing the area, reviewing camera footage, and following up on tips as the community shared information on social media, urging the driver to come forward.

By Saturday afternoon, authorities announced a breakthrough. Police confirmed the arrest of 24-year-old Michelle Guzman-Garcia, who investigators believe was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.

She now faces multiple charges connected to the fatal hit-and-run, including leaving the scene of a deadly accident.

Law enforcement officials have not yet released details about what led to the crash or why Guzman-Garcia allegedly fled instead of staying to help the victim.

Detectives are continuing to gather evidence and are asking anyone with additional information to contact Silent Witness, a tip line that allows people to provide information anonymously.

As news of Miguel Alteres’s death spread, the community surrounding 43rd Avenue began to grieve.

Neighbors described the intersection as busy and often dangerous, especially during the early morning hours when commuters and pedestrians share dimly lit streets.

Friends and family of Miguel have been left devastated, describing him as kind, hardworking, and always willing to help others.

Some have already placed candles, flowers, and photographs near the spot where he lost his life, turning the stretch of asphalt into a small memorial that reflects both sorrow and outrage.

Community members are calling for greater accountability and improved road safety measures, emphasizing that no one should lose their life this way.

Many are also expressing frustration over what they see as an all-too-common tragedy another hit-and-run that leaves families searching for justice.

While police have made an arrest, questions remain about the events leading up to the crash and the moments after it.

For now, investigators continue their work, piecing together the final moments of Miguel’s life and the decisions that led to the deadly collision.

As the case moves forward, Phoenix residents are reminded of the fragility of life and the lasting impact of one person’s actions behind the wheel.

The search for truth continues, even as the city mourns a life cut short.
