A 56‑year‑old woman has been identified as the victim in a fatal shooting that took place Sunday morning in Northwest Roanoke, prompting an ongoing police investigation and the arrest of a suspect, authorities said.
According to the Roanoke Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Burrell Street NW at approximately 9:50 a.m. on March 1 following reports of gunfire outside a convenience store. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a woman lying on the ground with apparent gunshot injuries. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim has since been identified as Kimberly Sue Lee, 56, a longtime Roanoke resident known by members of the community. Lee’s death has rocked local residents, many of whom described her as a familiar presence in the neighborhood and expressed deep sorrow over her loss.
In the hours following the shooting, law enforcement conducted an intensive investigation at the scene, canvassing the area for witnesses and evidence. Police officers collected surveillance footage from nearby businesses and spoke with individuals who were present at or near the convenience store when the incident occurred.
By later that same day, authorities announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the deadly shooting. 26‑year‑old Sincere Elijah Hardy, of Salem, Va., was taken into custody and charged with second‑degree murder related to Lee’s death.
Police have not released detailed information about what led to the confrontation or what may have motivated the shooting. Officials are continuing to piece together the events that unfolded, including the nature of any relationship between Hardy and Lee, if one existed.
Investigators are also working to establish whether the shooting was the result of a personal dispute, a chance encounter, or some other factor.
In a statement, Roanoke Police Chief Scott Booth said the department’s rapid response and cooperation from community members played a key role in quickly identifying and apprehending a suspect. He extended his condolences to Lee’s family and friends, acknowledging the profound impact such a violent crime has on those closest to the victim and the broader community.
Local residents have spoken on social media and in public forums about Lee’s death, describing a sense of shock and grief. Some community members shared memories of seeing her around town, offering condolences and recalling her presence, particularly in areas near the convenience store where the shooting occurred.
The Roanoke Police Department has urged anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation. As the case continues, authorities have said they will release further updates as appropriate, including any additional charges that may be filed as evidence is analyzed and interviews are completed.
For now, the community mourns the loss of Kimberly Sue Lee as law enforcement works to fully understand the circumstances surrounding her death and ensure that justice is served.
