Preacher’s Kid Charged in Fatal Shooting of 21-Year-Old Ex-Girlfriend After Breakup

A Ridgeland community is reeling after a 21-year-old woman was found shot to death inside her apartment, in what investigators describe as a tragic act of violence following turmoil in a relationship.

Autumn Diane Brookae Shanks, 21, was killed on February 7, 2025, inside her residence at the Pinebrook Apartments in Ridgeland, Mississippi. According to law enforcement officials, officers responded to reports of a shooting and discovered Autumn inside her bedroom with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities identified Dannquarious Deuntea Byest as a suspect in the case. Investigators say he was present at the apartment complex when officers arrived and was taken into custody without incident. He has since been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Autumn’s death.

Police allege the shooting followed turmoil in the couple’s relationship. While officials have not released extensive details about what occurred in the moments leading up to the gunfire, investigators indicated that the pair had recently experienced difficulties, and the incident unfolded inside Autumn’s bedroom.

Byest is currently being held without bond at the Madison County Detention Center as the case proceeds through the legal system. Prosecutors are expected to present further evidence as the investigation continues.

For Autumn’s family and friends, the arrest brings little relief in the face of devastating loss. Described as vibrant, kind, and full of promise, Autumn was just beginning a new chapter in her life. Loved ones say she had been working toward personal goals and looking ahead to the future with hope and determination.

“What should have been a fresh start turned into heartbreak,” a family acquaintance shared. “She had so much life left to live.”

The tragedy has sparked renewed conversations about domestic violence and the dangers that can sometimes follow relationship breakups. Advocates stress the importance of recognizing warning signs, seeking support during emotionally turbulent times, and ensuring that individuals have access to protective resources when needed. Breakups, while painful, should never escalate into violence.

Community members in Ridgeland have expressed shock that such a devastating crime occurred within a residential apartment complex. Neighbors reported seeing a heavy police presence at the Pinebrook Apartments following the incident. Many have since left flowers, candles, and handwritten notes in remembrance of Autumn.

Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with additional information about the events leading up to the shooting to come forward. Investigators continue to piece together timelines, communications, and other evidence to build a comprehensive case.

As the legal process unfolds, Autumn’s loved ones are focused on honoring her memory. Social media has filled with tributes celebrating her smile, her personality, and the positive energy she brought into the lives of others. At only 21 years old, her life was cut tragically short an outcome that has left family and friends grappling with grief and unanswered questions.

The case now moves to the courts, where prosecutors will seek accountability for Autumn Diane Brookae Shanks’ death. Meanwhile, her community mourns a young woman whose future was taken far too soon, and whose story serves as a sobering reminder of the serious consequences of relationship violence.
