Fatal Camarillo shooting death of Stephen Worthington - Obituary - Death News

A deadly shooting in Camarillo Saturday has left the community reeling, as authorities confirmed that 48‑year‑old Stephen Worthington was killed in a midday shooting that sparked a multi‑agency response and a subsequent high‑speed pursuit, culminating in the suspect’s death.

According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the 400 block of Walker Avenue at approximately 11:46 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds.

Despite life‑saving efforts by law enforcement and emergency responders, the victim  later identified as Worthington, a longtime resident of Camarillo  succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The sudden and violent nature of the incident shocked many who knew Worthington. Friends and neighbors described him as a familiar presence in the community, remembered for his friendly demeanor and deep ties to local events and everyday life in Camarillo.

Family members have not yet released a public statement, but close associates have expressed profound sorrow over his untimely death, calling him a “pillar of kindness” and a caring friend to many.

Following the shooting, deputies located a vehicle believed to be connected to the incident and attempted to stop it. When the driver failed to yield, a pursuit was initiated southbound on Highway 101, with speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

The vehicle was later spotted by Los Angeles Police Department officers on the 405 Freeway near Los Angeles International Airport. After the vehicle eventually came to a stop, the suspect died by suicide inside the car.

The sheriff’s department said the identities of the suspect and the victim were being withheld for several hours out of respect for the family, but later confirmed Worthington as the victim after notifying his relatives.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation, and authorities have emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators are urging anyone with information about the case to contact the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.

As news of Worthington’s death spread through Camarillo, tributes began appearing on social media and at local gathering spots.

Many expressed disbelief that someone so well regarded in the community could be lost in such a tragic manner. “Stephen was someone who always had time for others,” one neighbor wrote. “It’s heartbreaking that his life was cut short like this.”

Community leaders have also weighed in, noting that the violence underscores broader concerns about public safety and the impact of gun violence on families and cities alike.

“Our hearts go out to the Worthington family during this incredibly difficult time,” said a Camarillo city official. “We stand with them and with all those affected as we seek answers and work to support healing in our community.”

No details about a funeral or memorial service for Worthington have been made public yet, but friends say they expect to gather soon to honor his memory. In the meantime, local advocacy groups are encouraging conversations about violence prevention and community solidarity in the wake of this devastating event.

Worthington’s death a sudden and tragic loss  has left an indelible mark on Camarillo, prompting both mourning and reflection as the investigation continues.
