Shenandoah Graduate Aliyah Parker Dies in Council Bluffs Car Accident

Aliyah Parker, a 19-year-old Shenandoah graduate, died in a fatal car accident on Interstate 80 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, authorities confirmed Monday. Police identified Parker as the lone victim in the crash, which occurred shortly before 11:15 a.m. on Saturday at Mile Marker 0 on I-80 westbound, near the Nebraska-Iowa border.

According to the Council Bluffs Police Department, Parker was driving northbound in her 2008 Chevrolet Malibu when she lost control of the vehicle and collided with the rear of a semi-truck traveling in the same direction.

Investigators determined that speed too fast for the road conditions was the apparent cause of the accident, which took place on winter-affected interstate pavement that morning.

Emergency responders discovered Parker severely injured at the scene. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died of her injuries. The crash also forced traffic restrictions, with westbound lanes reduced to one lane for several hours while authorities conducted their investigation and cleared the scene.

Parker was a recent graduate from Shenandoah, Iowa a community southwest of Omaha where she was remembered by friends and family as a vibrant young woman with a bright future ahead.

Though detailed public statements from her school or community leaders have not yet been released, a GoFundMe page set up by a relative describes her as “such a bright light in this world,” emphasizing the deep impact she had on those around her and calling on others to pray for her family during this devastating time.

The online fundraiser notes that Parker’s passing was sudden and unexpected, and that her “light and her testimony will carry on,” with donations being sought to help cover funeral costs and support her grieving family.

Council Bluffs police are continuing their investigation and have asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information to contact the Traffic Unit at 712-328-4948.

Winter driving conditions and roadway safety have again been underscored by this tragedy. In recent weeks, the region experienced snowfall and icy conditions that prompted winter weather advisories across parts of Iowa and Nebraska conditions that can create dangerously slick roads, particularly for smaller passenger vehicles like the one Parker was driving.

While authorities have not yet released a full report on weather at the precise time of the accident, the police determination that speed was a factor suggests that conditions may have contributed to her loss of control on the interstate.

The accident has touched many in Parker’s hometown of Shenandoah, where residents and classmates are mourning the loss of a young life taken far too soon. Plans for memorials and remembrances are expected to be shared as the family and community come together to honor her memory.

Further updates are likely as more details emerge from ongoing investigations and statements from local officials.
