Rylen Yager Obituary Michigan: Fruitport Community Schools mourn the loss of 14-year-old fatally shot on Saturday

The Fruitport (Michigan) community is grieving the loss of a promising young life after 14-year-old Rylen Yager, an eighth-grade student at Fruitport Middle School, was fatally shot on Saturday evening in what local authorities are describing as a tragic and senseless act of violence

The heartbreaking incident occurred around 7:20 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, in the 2900 block of Romedius Street in Fruitport Township, where police responded to reports of gunfire and found the young teen deceased at the scene.

Fruitport Township Police initially handled the scene but transferred the investigation to the Michigan State Policedue to an affiliation between the victim’s family and the local department, according to official statements.

Investigators from the State Police are continuing to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and piece together the circumstances that led to Rylen’s death. No further details about a suspect, motive, or any arrests have been released as the inquiry remains active and ongoing

In a somber message shared with students, families, and community members, Fruitport Community Schools Superintendent Jason J. Kennedy confirmed the identity of the victim and expressed the profound sorrow felt throughout the district.

Superintendent Kennedy described Rylen as a young person who brought joy, warmth, and a bright spirit to those around him  someone with a “huge smile and a wonderful sense of humor” who made others feel “welcome and valued.”

“Rylen’s presence brought light and joy to many,” Kennedy wrote, noting that he had “a heart of gold,” was both artistic and athletic, and had a genuine love for life that left a lasting impression on classmates and teachers alike.

As a middle school student, Rylen was known for being kind, compassionate, and always willing to connect with others characteristics that helped build strong friendships and earned him admiration throughout the school community.

The news of Rylen’s death has sent shockwaves through Fruitport and the surrounding areas, prompting an outpouring of grief from classmates, educators, and neighbors. Fruitport Middle School and district leaders are coordinating emotional support and counseling resources for students, staff, and families who are struggling to process the sudden loss of someone so young and full of promise.

The district’s Emotional Support Team, in collaboration with the Muskegon Area Intermediate School District, is making trained counselors and social workers available to help students navigate their grief as they return to classes.

In his message, Superintendent Kennedy urged families and community members to support one another during this difficult time. “Hug your loved ones tonight and keep the family in your thoughts and prayers,” he wrote, calling on the entire community to come together in solidarity as they mourn.

Friends remember Rylen not just as a student, but as a vibrant young person whose smile and energy could light up a room. Tributes shared informally on social media describe a boy who enjoyed life, cared deeply for others, and had dreams and potential that will now remain forever unfulfilled.

The deep sense of loss is being felt far beyond the school hallways, into homes and family circles across the region.

As law enforcement continues its investigation, Fruitport Community Schools and local leaders are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and assist in the ongoing case.

For now, the focus remains on honoring Rylen’s memory, supporting those left behind, and seeking greater understanding and prevention to help protect other children from similar violence in the future.
