Riverton Mother and 8-Year-Old Daughter Killed in Tragic I-55 Crash Near Springfield

A quiet morning commute turned into a devastating tragedy on Interstate 55 just outside Springfield, Illinois, when a mother from Riverton and her young daughter were killed in a collision with a commercial truck early Tuesday.

The crash occurred around 6:40 a.m. on the southbound lanes of I‑55 near the Interstate 72 split a stretch of highway that typically carries heavy commuter and freight traffic each morning.

According to the Sangamon County Coroner and the Illinois State Police, the victims were 37‑year‑old Jennifer Damm of Riverton and her 8‑year‑old daughter, Kendyn Damm. Both were pronounced dead at the scene from blunt‑force trauma after the family’s vehicle struck the rear of a semi‑tractor‑trailer.

The crash prompted authorities to close southbound Interstate 55 for several hours, snarling morning traffic and drawing first responders from multiple agencies.

Emergency personnel worked through challenging conditions to clear wreckage, investigate the collision, and recover evidence from the scene before reopening the roadway around midday.

Early reports indicate that the family’s car collided with the truck just as rush‑hour traffic was building, though the exact sequence of events remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.

At this stage, troopers have not released details about weather, speed, or whether either vehicle was attempting evasive action prior to impact. The ongoing investigation aims to determine whether road conditions, driver actions, or other factors played a role in the deadly crash.

News of the fatalities spread quickly throughout the local community, particularly within the North Mac School District, where Kendyn was a student. School officials posted on social media that counselors would be available to support students and staff grappling with the loss of one of their own.

Tributes began pouring in from classmates, parents, and neighbors remembering Kendyn as a joyful, bright young girl with many friends whose smile touched those around her.

Friends and family also shared condolences for Jennifer, a mother whose life was cut short while performing one of her most fundamental roles.

In a small, tight‑knit community like Riverton and the surrounding Sangamon County, news of such a sudden loss resonates deeply, prompting an outpouring of support from local residents and leaders.

This tragedy marks a profound loss for both the North Mac community and the larger Springfield area. In response, schools and community centers have offered grief counseling and spaces for the public to remember the mother and daughter together.

Many have highlighted the collision as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers of highway travel, particularly on high‑speed interstates where the slightest momentary lapse can have catastrophic consequences.

As the investigation continues, authorities have asked motorists who may have witnessed the crash or have dashcam footage to come forward. Such evidence could help reconstruct the moments leading up to the collision and clarify contributing factors.

Meanwhile, the community continues to mourn, remembering Jennifer and Kendyn not just as accident victims, but as cherished individuals whose lives ended far too soon.
