Eric Battjes - Obituary -Eric Battjes - Death News -Eric Battjes dies in fatal Copper Mountain ski crash

On Friday, January 23, 2026, 44-year-old Eric Battjes of Stillwater, Minnesota, died following a tragic skiing accident at Copper Mountain Ski Resort in Summit County, Colorado. Battjes was visiting the resort  a popular destination in the Rocky Mountains known for its challenging terrain and winter sports  when the fatal incident occurred.

According to officials with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened on an intermediate slope known as the American Flyer run. Battjes lost control of his skis while navigating the trail and, at high speed, collided with a tree with considerable force

First responders from the Copper Mountain Ski Patrol were quickly on scene and provided immediate medical attention before transporting him to CommonSpirit Emergency and Urgent Care near the base of the mountain. Despite their life-saving efforts, Battjes succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The Summit County Coroner’s Office later confirmed Battjes’ identity, and law enforcement emphasized that the crash remains under routine investigation. There were no indications of foul play, and authorities reported that the crash occurred during regular resort operations on a groomed trail  underscoring how unpredictable and dangerous alpine skiing can be even for experienced visitors.

Friends and family have been left grappling with the shock of his sudden loss. A native of Stillwater, Battjes was likely on a recreational trip combining his love of winter sports with time away from home.

While details about his personal life  his family, profession, and passions beyond skiing have not been widely published, local community members and loved ones are expected to remember him warmly for the life he led and the impact he had on those around him.

Skiing accidents, while relatively rare, can carry serious consequences. Colorado ski areas report multiple fatalities each season, often due to loss of control on intermediate slopes or collisions with obstacles such as trees.

These accidents highlight inherent risks in the sport, even for skiers wearing protective gear like helmets  Battjes was observed wearing one at the time of the crash.

Copper Mountain Resort, where the accident occurred, attracts thousands of visitors each year from across the U.S. and abroad. Its varied terrain includes beginner, intermediate, and advanced runs, with terrain features that challenge skiers’ control at high speeds.

While resort ski patrol teams maintain the trails and respond rapidly to emergencies, incidents like this remain sobering reminders of the hazards associated with winter sports.

In response to the tragedy, Summit County authorities extended their deepest sympathies to Battjes’ family and friends. Their thoughts also extend to all those affected by the loss, acknowledging how such a sudden and violent accident can leave ripples through communities united in grief and remembrance.

As friends and family mourn, they will likely celebrate Battjes’ zest for life and passion for adventure  qualities that brought him to the mountains he loved. Plans for memorial services or public remembrances have not been widely reported at this time, but those closest to him undoubtedly continue to cope with the profound impact of his untimely passing.
