Authorities have identified the person killed in Sunday’s fatal car crash in West Deptford, New Jersey, as a local Uber driver who was working at the time of the collision.
The accident occurred near the intersection of Red Bank Avenue and Hessian Avenue, a busy stretch of road not far from several residential neighborhoods and small businesses.
According to investigators, emergency crews were called to the scene just after 7:00 a.m. on Sunday following reports of a serious two-vehicle collision.
When police and firefighters arrived, they found one vehicle identified as a gray Toyota sedan commonly used for rideshare driving with heavy front-end damage.
The driver, who has since been confirmed to be working for Uber at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene despite immediate efforts by paramedics to save his life.
The second vehicle, described as an SUV, sustained significant damage as well.
The driver of that vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Officials have not yet released the name of that individual, pending further investigation.
Residents who live near the intersection reported being startled awake by the sound of the crash.
One neighbor described hearing “a loud bang followed by car alarms” and rushing outside to see the wreckage.
The area was quickly cordoned off by police tape as investigators worked to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision.
Traffic in the area was diverted for several hours, causing delays along both Red Bank and Hessian avenues.
The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the deceased was driving for Uber, though it is not yet clear whether he had a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Uber released a brief statement expressing condolences to the driver’s family, saying the company was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our driver-partners” and would cooperate fully with law enforcement during the investigation.
Authorities are still working to determine the exact cause of the crash. Early indications suggest that one of the vehicles may have entered the intersection against a traffic signal, but officials have not yet confirmed that detail publicly.
Investigators are reviewing nearby surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to piece together the moments before impact. Weather conditions at the time of the crash were clear, and no major obstructions or hazards were reported on the roadway.
Local residents say the intersection has been the site of multiple accidents in recent years, raising renewed concerns about traffic safety and visibility in the area.
Some community members have called for additional traffic lights or signage to prevent further tragedies.
As of Monday, police have not released the name of the Uber driver, pending notification of next of kin.
The investigation remains active, and anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area is urged to contact West Deptford Police.
