Known for his deep connection to music and culture, Kumanjayi’s life and work celebrated both his Warlpiri heritage and his love of storytelling through song.

His recent passing has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of experiencing his music and kindness.

Kumanjayi was best known for his long-standing contributions to the Rising Wind Band and his involvement with PAW Media, organizations that played vital roles in amplifying Indigenous voices and preserving local culture through creative expression. 

As a guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Kumanjayi had a gift for blending traditional Warlpiri influences with contemporary sounds, creating music that spoke to the heart and resonated deeply with listeners from all walks of life. 

His songs carried stories of country, family, and resilience messages that continue to inspire and connect communities across Central Australia.

Friends and colleagues remember Kumanjayi as a humble and generous man who always carried himself with quiet strength.

To honor his extraordinary life, a funeral and memorial service will be held on Saturday, 15th November 2025, in Yuendumu, where family, friends, and fellow artists will gather to celebrate Kumanjayi’s legacy. 

The event will be a powerful reflection of the impact he had on his community a day of remembrance, music, and cultural pride. 

Following the service, a tribute concert will take place at PAW Media, featuring performances by several bands from across the region. 

The concert will serve as both a farewell and a celebration, with musicians coming together to share the songs and spirit that Kumanjayi championed throughout his life.
